Is Your PA Registration Suspended for a Lapse in Insurance? Here's How to Fix It

Gary Orvieto • October 16, 2026

Why am I getting a Ticket?  What is an F-Stop? What do you mean my TAGS are suspended??

Quick answer: If your car insurance is cancelled and you go more than 30 days without new coverage, PennDOT suspends your registration for three months. You can usually avoid that by paying a $500 civil penalty plus a restoration fee and showing proof of insurance. If the gap was 30 days or less and you didn't drive the car, you can often avoid a suspension entirely. The Imperial Agency, an Authorized PennDOT On-Line Agent in Bala Cynwyd and Northeast Philadelphia since 1987, can look up your record, get you insured, and clear most suspensions in one visit. We speak English, Spanish, French, and Haitian Creole.

WHY PENNDOT THINKS YOU HAD A LAPSE

When a policy is cancelled, your insurance company must tell PennDOT. When you buy a new policy, your new company does not have to. So even if you switched companies with no gap, PennDOT may only know your old policy ended. PennDOT then mails you a letter asking for proof of insurance. If you ignore it, your registration will be suspended, even if you were insured the whole time.

FIND YOUR SITUATION

1. You switched insurance companies with no gap

You just need to prove it. Bring us PennDOT's letter (or we'll print it) and we'll get PennDOT the policy and dates they need, contacting your insurance company if necessary.

2. Your gap was 30 days or less, and you did not drive the car

You can avoid a suspension with proof of your new insurance and a signed statement (PennDOT Form MV-221) that the car was not driven. Important: If the car was driven at all during the gap, the three-month suspension still applies.

3. Your gap was more than 30 days

You have two choices:

- Serve the three-month suspension: surrender your plate and registration card, don't drive the car, then pay the restoration fee and show proof of insurance.

- Pay a $500 civil penalty plus the restoration fee and show proof of insurance, and keep your registration. This option can only be used once every 12 months (PennDOT Form MV-222).

4. Your registration is suspended AND expired for more than 90 days

In many cases, we can restore and renew the registration in our office the same day, without paying the $500 civil penalty. Renewal for a passenger car is $48 plus a $5 county fee; truck registration varies by weight.

5. You're not driving the car anymore

If you sold it, stored it, or it was repossessed, return the plate and registration card within 30 days of the insurance cancellation to avoid a suspension. We can take your plate, give you a dated receipt, and hand-deliver it to PennDOT in Harrisburg through our daily messenger, then get you a stamped PennDOT receipt as proof.

NOT SURE WHAT YOUR STATUS IS?

We can run a general inquiry on a person's or company's vehicle record to see whether a plate is suspended, expired, still active, or dead, and exactly what PennDOT requires. For privacy reasons, we can't give this information over the phone; please visit either office. A small fee applies.

Lost plate or plate taken? If the plate is still on record, we can issue a replacement.

COMMON QUESTIONS

Does my lender's insurance count?

No. Insurance your lender buys to protect its interest is not liability insurance and doesn't meet Pennsylvania's requirement.

Can I appeal a suspension?

Yes, but only within 30 days of the date PennDOT mailed the suspension notice.

Can I drive or park the car while it's suspended?

No. Don't drive it, and don't park it on the street or in a public place; it can be ticketed and towed.
